Everything about Combat Knife totally explained
A combat knife is a large
knife designed for military or paramilitary use. A common misconception is that "combat knives" are specialized for
close combat, but the reality is that ever since the end of trench warfare combat knives have been almost universally designed for utility/tool use (clearing foliage, chopping branches for hiding vehicles or for sniper cover, opening ammo crates, etc). Modern military forces have no use for close quarters knives except for use by small specialized groups. One example of what military knives would be like if they were designed for killing instead of for prying, hammering, and chopping wood is the old
trench knife.
Modern combat knives come in many shapes and sizes. Most militaries today have standardized the types of combat knives issued to infantry soldiers.
In the
United States Marine Corps, the standard issue combat knife is the
KA-BAR, and has been since
World War II.
The famed
Gurkha regiments favor the
Kukri, a bladed weapon that more closely resembles a
machete or
Filipino Bolo than a knife. With quick, chopping blows, a well trained Kukri wielder is devastating in close combat.
One famous combat knife is the
British Fairbairn-Sykes, which is better classified as a dagger with its double-edged design. This dagger is probably the only modern "combat knife" designed for fighting instead of for field use.
